Airbus opens modern material & logistics centre
Airbus Material and Logistics Centre in the Middle
East has been officially opened at the Dubai Airport
Free Zone in the United Arab Emirates in a ceremony
with his Highness Sheikh Ahmed Bin Saeed Al Maktoum,
Chairman of Dubai Civil Aviation Authority, and Tom
Enders, Airbus President and CEO.
The opening of the Materials and Logistics Centre
gives Airbus greater proximity to valuable
customers, and facilitates a quicker and more
reactive response to their needs.
It also reduces the time and cost in transporting
spares. The efficiency gains and economic benefit of
the centre are part and parcel of Airbus' commitment
to eco-efficiency, to help the aviation sector
prosper by adding value with less environmental
impact.
"With predicted passenger traffic growth of over six
per cent and cargo of five per cent in the next 20
years, the Middle East will undergo one of the
biggest aviation growth rates of anywhere in the
world, so a world class logistics centre in the
region is essential", said Airbus President and CEO,
Tom Enders.
Dubai has one of the world's most modern and
fastest-growing airports, serving more than 120
airlines flying to more than 205 destinations
worldwide, and hence an ideal location for this type
of centre.
The Material and Logistics Centre is located next to
Dubai International Airport and covers over 3,700
square metres of storage space and office facilities
ensuring optimised logistics and efficiency.
The 24 hour a day centre will stock more than 5,000
different parts with around 43,000 items in at any
one time, offering customer support and aircraft
spares distribution to regional and worldwide
destinations 24 hours a day.
Global freight expected to reach US$14 trillion
by 2020
Dubai on course to be amongst the top logistic hubs
in the world, say industry experts speaking at the
MEED's Gulf Logistics Forum 2008 in Dubai.
Global transportation solutions provider Aramex,
chaired a panel discussion to share international
and regional transportation experts on the emergence
of the region as a logistical hub.
With global freight expected to reach USD 14
trillion by 2020, and the Gulf’s strategic position
as a major trade hub between Asia and Europe, the
Gulf’s imports and exports are now close to over USD
320 billion. Capturing this business represents an
unmissable opportunity for all regional and global
logistics companies.
Hussein Hachem, CEO of Aramex GCC speaking at the
event highlighted the need for logistic companies to
be ready to meet the growing demands of the
industry; “This forum gives us a platform to
address, discuss and highlight the core fundamentals
of the logistic industry, our objective and focus
should not be on minimizing cost but rather on
improving efficiencies and optimizing cost so as to
drive the growth of the industry.” he added.
Aramex remains focused on working through strategic
alliances and acquisitions to facilitate the growth
of the region as a logistic hub.
Logistics of a steel mill : Mallory acts as supplier
during Nucor construction
With Nucor Corp. set to start production at its new
Memphis facility July 12, Mallory Alexander
International Logistics was given the task of
distributing and warehousing at times more than
75,000 square feet of material needed for
construction of the new steel mill.
The material supported construction of the $300
million Nucor facility that will produce 850,000
tons of steel product a year and employ about 225
people once it is fully operational.
Mallory Alexander, which specializes in global
logistics and cotton warehousing with about 2
million square feet of warehouse space, was able to
take on the challenge thanks to a prior relationship
with Nucor.
"We've had some business relationships in the past
moving material in and out of the country, be it
products or equipment, as we build steel mills
around the country," says Thad Solomon, general
manager of the Nucor Memphis facility. "I think it
certainly allowed us to have a lot of confidence by
knowing what we were getting into and who we were
dealing with."
